Do farmed animals still have lives worth living? If not, should veterinarians now be vegetarians?

How much meat is now produced in the traditional way?

I’ve been reflecting on our changing regimes for farmed animals, and partly as a consequence, I’m taking part in Veganuary, becoming vegan for the month of January.

I’ve always had an innate sense that animals are the same as ourselves in many ways and that they deserve our care and affection. So how can it be, then, that I, like most veterinarians, am a meat eater? How can we justify killing and eating living creatures that we care about?

Good luck Pete! I am a vet based in Dublin too. I’ve been a vegetarian for 6 years and vegan for about a year, for the reasons you outlined in your article. It’s not so hard once you get used to it, there is lots of lovely food, great recipes and good cafes and restaurants in Dublin and Wicklow. Remember to take your Vitamin B12 and you’ll be grand :)
