10 min podcast: update on XL Bully ban in Ireland

Today is 1st February 2025, the day when the ban on XL Bullies comes into force in Ireland.

I have recorded a short podcast on this topic, along with East Coast FM, and while this was done 10 days ago, it’s still relevant. You can listen below.

There has also been a last minute update on this, explained in an excellent RTE article which you can read here.

This explains that there has been a delay on the new regulation that would have allowed agents for the Minister for Rural Development to seize or euthanise XL Bully dogs in the care of animal welfare organisations.

A team of young lawyers worked with six animal welfare charities to appeal against the legislation, and they have been partially successful.

Mr Justice John Jordan granted an injunction  to delay this aspect of the new laws after noting the lack of a review mechanism in the regulations over a dog warden’s assessment of the dog breed in advance of it being euthanised.

This injunction will remain in force until 27 February when a full hearing on a challenge to the new regulations for the breed will take place.

This is eminently sensible: I have always said that the definition of the XL Bully breed is too vague: an appeal process, at the very least, is essential.

The RTE article also explains that that 235 certificates of exemption have been issued so far. In order to keep an XL Bully type, owners need to either have a certificate of exemption or have proof they have applied. The certificate confirms that the dog is licensed, neutered and microchipped.
