Home cooking for dogs: vet spot on Ireland AM

This week on Ireland AM, we discussed creating home-cooked diets for your pet. Watch the video clip at the link below to follow my own effort to create a home-made dinner for Finzi and Kiko. And if you want to buy some of the products shown on air, visit Nature & Nurture pet store in Glenageary, who very kindly supplied me with samples.

The topic of choosing what to feed your pet is one that comes up time and time again. There are many untrue myths about pet food, and this understandably causes confusion to pet owners.
The truth is that commercial pet food is legally obliged to be nutritionally balanced and complete: professional nutritionists are employed to ensure that this is the case. If pet owners choose this type of food for their pet, it will definitely provide the correct nutrients. It also happens to be convenient and reasonably priced: it genuinely suits most pets and most people very well indeed, That said, it may not suit every pet, and more than one particular type of diet will suit every human being. This is something that owners need to judge for themselves, but they do need to remember to ensure that whatever they feed their pet provides complete nutrition, so that their pet will thrive on it.
In theory it’s possible to home cook for pets, but in practice, it’s more complicated than you’d think. A pet’s nutrition needs to be properly balanced, and it is not as easy as you’d think to make that happen.
