Abandoned and suffering horses in Ireland in 2014

On Ireland AM today, we discussed the shocking issue of horses and donkeys being left to fend for themselves across Ireland.

Many charities  are involved in trying to tackle horse welfare issue: here are three of the main ones:

ISPCA Hay Drive

The ISPCA is urgently asking the Irish public who care about horses to text Hay to 50300 to donate €4 or make a monthly gift of €4 through their website (ISPCA) which will buy a bale of hay and feed a neglected horse.”

Re: the ISPCA hay drive, some people get the impression that they will feed every hungry looking horse around the country. Such action just absolves owners of responsibility and is not sustainable. The hay is primarily for the equines in the ISPCA care and for short term situations out in the field while a more permanent resolution is found.

Irish Horse Welfare Trust

The Irish Horse Welfare Trust is hosting a Gala night at the  Bord Gais Theatre to see “The War Horse” on Wednesday April 2nd.

This world renowned play is coming to Dublin for 6 weeks, starting on March 25th, and the organisers have agreed to give a special Gala performance on April 2nd for charity. Premium seats are for sale at €100 each, including drinks at the interval, an opportunity to speak to cast,  and a champagne and canape reception beforehand etc. Buy tickets through Bord Gais ticket office – ring and ask for Gala Event tickets

This major fundraiser is being supported by Horseware Ireland, a major supplier of equine equipment.
