I qualified as a veterinarian back in 1985 – that’s a whopping 28 years ago. My career has been a little unusual, embracing media work as well as conventional veterinary practice. My university – in Edinburgh – recently contacted me to ask if I would consider being an “e-mentor” – in other words, a point of contact for younger veterinary graduates from Edinburgh who have questions or concerns about their own careers. I’m delighted to oblige: choosing the right career path is one of the most important decisions that any of us need to make, and if I can contribute to a useful discussion with anyone, I’d be thrilled.

Please note that I am unable to answer veterinary questions in comments. If you have questions or concerns about your pet's health it is always better to contact your vet.
