Podcast: the surge in surrendered dogs in Ireland – from Newstalk’s Pat Kenny Show

The Dogs Trust charity has reported a 73% increase in post-Christmas surrender requests for unwanted dogs, with eight requests per day to surrender dogs throughout the month of January 2022.

In this podcast Corinna Fitzsimmons, from Dogs Trust along with Pete the Vet explain the background to this issue.

Corrina explained that misinformation is a big reason for giving up dogs, explaining that the majority of online ads have some kind of mistruth in them.

“Maybe it’s where the dogs are coming from, the could be from a puppy farm. People are alluding to the fact they are a family reared pup when nothing could be further from the truth.”

Dogs Trust is appealing to anyone who is interested in fostering a dog to contact them.
