How to work out how old your dog is in “dog years”

There’s an old myth that to work out a dog’s age in “dog years”, you just need to multiply the number of calendar years by seven. However everyone knows that while this can make sense for dogs in the mid years of life, it doesn’t work for very young animals, or for very old dogs.
